What's in an Image? - Online

What are the historical, social, political implications of images, largely from a news and documentary perspective? How does photography provide a service/disservice in representing large global issues like poverty or climate change? Students will engage in such topics as: thinking about viral images, images used in propaganda, ethics of AI images, fake news and the complications of representations while documenting 'the other'. In this course, students will have assigned readings and film screenings before each class to prepare for an in-class discussion each week. Students won't be 'making' new work in this class but it will act as a stimulus to their work and thinking around photography. We will also look at artists' who have worked with photography (not as photographers) but using the photographic medium through collage, appropriation, digital manipulation and image-text practices.
